The Heroes of Travia
The second oldest sentient species, and the oldest civilization in the known world. In its early history, the Tiktaalik sought to conquer the seas and became a colonialist, trading empire, sponsoring trading posts throughout Travia, with some of them even developing into full fledged cities, as in the case of Kalitlan and Tipolihulcan. As the merchant class continued to grow, they began to chafe under the rules of the monarchy. Eventually, they rose up in rebellion against the monarchy, beheading the king and establishing the Xochitl Commonwealth. Ostensibly a republic, the Commonwealth is ruled by a parliament headed by a Lord Protector. The Lord Protector governs for life, and appoints his successor.
After losing the war, the Royalist Tiktaalik fled the mainland for city of Tipolihulcan on the island of Castus. There, they created a government-in-exile, ruled by the descendants of the dead King. The Royalist Tiktaalik are in possession of the hom-tah (a gourd trumpet similar to the those of the Cliff Elves) of the first Tiktaalik king, Quixotl the Great. Legend states that the hom-tah can be heard whenever the Tiktaalik people are in danger. The hom-tah has been heard several times throughout recorded history, with one of the more notable bellows occuring the moment King Coatlitzli was beheaded. Most recently, it was heard several months prior to the assassination of the ambassadors in Steel Forges.
